The BPA – “Seattle” – Song of the Week Vol 1

The BPA – “Seattle (Radio Edit)” Listen Here

Having heard this song a couple of times on KEXP.org’s broadcasting collaboration with 91.7 FM in NYC, I am very intrigued. The Brighton Port Authority (BPA) is a project of UK DJ Norman Cook’s, aka Fatboy Slim. Featuring the vocals of Emmy the Great, “Seattle” is incredibly catchy. The chorus “See sky falling…new day dawning every single day in America.” is sing-a-long  good. The track has been remixed as well but of the two versions I have heard, neither seem as great.

Apparently the album, I Think We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat, is already available on Amazon.com but will officially be released on February 3rd on Cook’s on Southern Fried Records label.

Jukebox the Ghost @ Rack n Roll

Review – Jukebox the Ghost – January 16th 2009 @ Rack n Roll, Stamford, CT on Popmatters

Aside from the songs on Jukebox the Ghost’s first studio album Let Live and Let Ghosts, there is also their cover of Ace of Base’s “Beautiful Life” on the Guilt by Association Vol 2 CD (also featuring a track by My Brightest Diamond who was reviewed over at Relix. That cover song can be heard over at this page.

Not much else to add than what is above, other than I often want to call the band Juicebox the Ghost. It was a very fun live show and I got to say hi to Chris Bro of 107.1 The Peak who is the host of the NEXT Concert Charity Series at Rack n Roll. And as this is a monthly series, keep an eye out on the next one February 6th featuring The Rosewood Thieves.

Andrew Bird is coming to town

Update: Andrew Bird’s latest post on the Measure for Measure blog at NY Times about the instrumental half.

The first time I saw Andrew Bird, it was at Webster Hall and I had obtained a pair of tix as well as meet-and-greet passes via an auction on Charity Folks. Andrew is a violinist who enjoys looping sounds and his whistling to create his songs. And he also wears unique socks. So after the show I got to say hi to him courtesy of Charity Folks. This was around the time of the release of his Armchair Apocrypha album and through a contest at Paste, I won an autographed promo-flat for the album that I got in the mail sometime after.

Update: Listen to the whole album Noble Beast courtesy of NPR as well as keep an eye out for a live chat session that he will be doing with NPR “Discuss your favorite ‘Noble Beast’ songs with guest Andrew Bird, here at 1 p.m. ET on Jan. 8, 2009.”

This winter he has a new album coming out Noble Beast which hopefully breaks him into the mainstream. If you pre-order the deluxe edition you get a bonus disc of instrumental tracks called Useless Creatures. I havnt heard it yet, but its great its streaming for free. The NY Times had featured posts by him on one of their blogs and just recently posted a lengthy article about him in their magazine that is a recommended read for anyone considering listening to him. Some of his earlier stuff sounded like gypsy/swing music and I had heard he played with the Squirrel Nut Zippers but I dont know if thats true but its all worth checking out.

Not too long ago, I excitedly picked up second hand copies I saw of the early AB album Music of Hair and his first live release Fingerlings 1 both seemingly autographed. So in total I have his initial indie breakthrough Mysterious Production of Eggs on cd, Armchair on vinyl (with autographed flat), Fingerlings 1 and Music of Hair (which I cant tell if they are original prints or more recent but Fingerlings has original artwork). I hope to see Andrew again at Carnegie Hall but if not, as long as whoever goes becomes a new loyal fan, that will be even better.

El Ten Eleven

El Ten Eleven is a duo that I first read about over at another blog.I got to check out about 20 minutes of their November 26th 2008 set at Cafe Nine in New Haven and rather enjoyed what I heard. They made music that reminded me of The New Deal, danceable, sorta electronic sounding and pretty cool. Wish I could write more, but didnt stay long enough nor am familiar enough with their music to tell you what they played.

Define Dancing

•December 4, 2008 • 1 Comment

One of the most delightful scenes in any movie is in Wall-E, where Wall-E and Eve “dance” outside the Axiom. You’ll have to see the movie to get the feel for this song better though. I highly recommend it as one of the top films of 2008.
I was pleased to see the Recording Academy recognized this song and wanted to nominate it for its famous “Category 86 “. And and I hope it wins.

Another Paste Contest Win. Yippee!

•September 8, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Previously this summer, I had taken some photos at a Spin event which included a team from Paste Magazine. Last year before summer, Paste magazine had sent me an cd flat promo autographed by Andrew Bird from the release of his new(est) album Armchair Apocrypha.

Well I apparently just won again, this time a Tiesto cd and an Armani gift card. In the past, I had won a couple things from Giantstep.net as well, including an autographed Ben Watt cd and an apparently never ending subscription to Paper Magazine.

Win a Tiësto CD and a $100 Armani Exchange Gift Card
With over two decades in the electronic music world, Grammy nominated DJ Tiësto released his newest double disc mix compilation, In Search of Sunrise 7 – Asia, on June 10th. Inspired by his travels to the Far East, Tiësto brings an Asian flare to a seamless journey through the latest and best trance, house and techno. Paste and Armani Exchange are giving away the new album as well as a $100 Armani Exchange gift card to (1) one lucky winner. For more information about Tiësto’s new album and dates for his summer tour, go to www.tiesto.com. “
