Andrew Bird is coming to town

Update: Andrew Bird’s latest post on the Measure for Measure blog at NY Times about the instrumental half.

The first time I saw Andrew Bird, it was at Webster Hall and I had obtained a pair of tix as well as meet-and-greet passes via an auction on Charity Folks. Andrew is a violinist who enjoys looping sounds and his whistling to create his songs. And he also wears unique socks. So after the show I got to say hi to him courtesy of Charity Folks. This was around the time of the release of his Armchair Apocrypha album and through a contest at Paste, I won an autographed promo-flat for the album that I got in the mail sometime after.

Update: Listen to the whole album Noble Beast courtesy of NPR as well as keep an eye out for a live chat session that he will be doing with NPR “Discuss your favorite ‘Noble Beast’ songs with guest Andrew Bird, here at 1 p.m. ET on Jan. 8, 2009.”

This winter he has a new album coming out Noble Beast which hopefully breaks him into the mainstream. If you pre-order the deluxe edition you get a bonus disc of instrumental tracks called Useless Creatures. I havnt heard it yet, but its great its streaming for free. The NY Times had featured posts by him on one of their blogs and just recently posted a lengthy article about him in their magazine that is a recommended read for anyone considering listening to him. Some of his earlier stuff sounded like gypsy/swing music and I had heard he played with the Squirrel Nut Zippers but I dont know if thats true but its all worth checking out.

Not too long ago, I excitedly picked up second hand copies I saw of the early AB album Music of Hair and his first live release Fingerlings 1 both seemingly autographed. So in total I have his initial indie breakthrough Mysterious Production of Eggs on cd, Armchair on vinyl (with autographed flat), Fingerlings 1 and Music of Hair (which I cant tell if they are original prints or more recent but Fingerlings has original artwork). I hope to see Andrew again at Carnegie Hall but if not, as long as whoever goes becomes a new loyal fan, that will be even better.
