Underworld. Dancin’ and Artjammin’

Nearly 6 years after we saw Underworld for the 1st time, we caught them for the 4th time at the All Points West Festival on Friday August 8th. Very few musical acts (that I have seen) give off as much energy as Underworld. Despite it being bright and sunny, I still got my groove on for their set including my faves, “Two Months Off”, “King of Snake” and “Born Slippy”. They utilized the same light balloons they had from their set last year at Summerstage but this time without colored lighting. I wish they had a longer set, and I wish it had been darker, but there are no complaints about what they did. After “Born Slippy” I had actually thought they were finished, so to have them perform two more songs was fantastic, my energy not completely utilized from the dancing, drinking and sun. I hope to see these guys again soon….

Aside from their live shows, the members of Underworld and several other folks are all part of Tomato, an artist collective of sorts. (Remember the British say “tomato” while we say “tomato”). And for two short weeks at the Jacobson Howard gallery, there is a Tomato exhibit called Beautiful Burnout. My friend got to take in the opening night festivities which combined with the release of the Songs for Tibet cd from the Art of Peace foundation. Her review is up on Spin.com. I got to go a couple of days later and took some photos (shared if you click through below). Though there was no free cheese and wine, I did get to John Warwicker as he painted me into the one “live” painting. He vented his frustration (well calmly pointed out) how terrible American cheese is as he attempted to eat his sandwich. I ended up buying the Songs for Tibet cd, as it contains some unique takes of songs exclusive to the compilation including tracks from Sting, Moby, Regina Spektor and, of course, Underworld.
