Nitin Sawhney
On my other blog, I once briefly mentioned the movie The Namesake and how it had some moments that I felt could have been drawn from my experiences. But I have yet to recognize the talent behind the score of that movie, Nitin Sawhney. wiki and myspace. Its a very good supporting soundtrack to a very unique film.
Nitin has released more than half a dozen albums, worked with orchestras to make film and video game scores and done some DJing and remixing. He creates amazing tracks primarily with South Asian touches and is constantly up to something new. I just missed a piece he composed for the Akram Khan dance piece that was performed in NYC. He also has a undercurrent of political awareness to them, with wiki saying Beyond Skin uses nuclear weapons as a theme.
A couple of tracks that I love are Nadia from Beyond Skin, a sort of drum’n'bass affair with vocals and Breathing Light from Prophesy, which starts with a news clip sample about fighting in Sarajevo before it also ventures into some drum’n'bass and has a really cool flute over the string section. I guess it should be noted his albums are electronic based though his other works are of various genres.
But why I wanted to make a post was because I noticed that he’s going to be in Toronto in June doing several events, a Q&A and workshop, DJing and presenting his piece A Throw of Dice. And I wish I was going (or that he was coming to NYC). A Throw of Dice is an orchestral piece he composed for a silent film from 1929 and his soundtrack is available (currently) only as mp3 on itunes or amazon, but since amazon has mp3, thats where I got it from.
But this summer, since Nitin isnt coming, I will be on the lookout for events Karsh Kale has; some at Joes pub but in particular his new “live score” for the Bruce Lee film “Enter the Dragon” in Brooklyn. That will kick ass. And its on my calendar. July 19th. I’m there.
