This post is a long time coming.
For the longest time, my only “classical” cd was the soundtrack to the movie, The Red Violin, featuring Joshua Bell as the solo violinist. I dont know why I loved the soundtrack, perhaps it was the delightful theme from the gypsies where its all fast and spinning and wow! (“The Gypsies; Journey Across Europe”).
For the past few months, I’ve picked up a few more classical cds, and I’m definately in love with Joshua Bells latest “The Voice of the Violin”. My favorite track is “Song to the Moon (from Rusalka)” and then “Ave Maria” but since those two tracks are at the beginning of the album, I really should try and repeat listen the last part of the album more.
But anyways, I missed his performance last week at Carnegie Hall. It was last Sunday April 1st. Why didnt I go? I dont even know. I could have bought a ticket (it wasnt easy, but there was occasionally one to buy on the site).
Joshua Bell was just featured on the cover of the Washington Post Magazine: here. Didnt know they had a magazine? Yeah it doesnt matter, but still, I’m happy I found this article.
They reference the other “Classical” composer I’m interested in, Philip Glass. What ties the classical/instrumental music I enjoy together? I have to watch the -Qatsi movies, I’ve had them for a while. At least I watched Baraka already.
Now I own a couple other classical cds, including a Kronos Quartet one (not the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack, but the Asha Bhosle (Indian) one), a few Philip Glass ones that I had got for free (I wish I could get the music from his Galileo Gallilei as theres a scene where physics is discovered and its very delightful), Anne-Sophie Mutters Mozart Sonatas and the “best” classical cd from 2006 according to NY Times, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson’s Neruda Songs (I havnt really enjoyed it). I should be the Joshua Bell ones soon, currently he’s #7 on my “overall top artists” as tracked by last.fm.
On a side note: I think its better that I write quickly now and not even flesh out my posts (see the “review” of Timbaland below) because I’ll at least get my thoughts out there.
